There arrives for Matthieu Rocaille, the heir to the sovereign duchy of Siovale, a modest basket containing an array of fruit seasonal and otherwise. Each piece has been selected with a discriminating eye; each is either at or just approaching its moment of perfect ripeness; each is of a colour which harmonises exquisitely with the rest. Grapes, peaches, oranges, pomegranates, nectarines — as he delves through the layers, he’ll espy not a single bruise.

The accompanying letter is written upon the finest and most fragile vellum, in an exquisite calligraphic hand, each word and each letter uncannily precise. The colour of the ink, green with particles of gold, green so dark that in places it’s almost black, is a tribute to House Rocaille.

My dear Matthieu,

If I may call you so — if an old affection licenses such a liberty.

I rejoiced to hear that you were returned to us, and I wish you a swift recovery from your ordeal. Siovale is blessed to know you as its heir.

Oriane Somerville de Toluard

The seal is impressed in silver wax: the “Œ” ligature, incorporating a crescent moon, which for these three decades has sealed not only the private correspondence of Oriane herself, but that of Enguerrand, the duc de Toluard.
