"Who's there?" The guard past the doorway screams. Previously, the squad that had gone into Genoa managed to get past a canal just out of the way, where an obscure passage into the cisterns of the city led to a stairwell next to the gatehouse. An oversight by the architects of Genoa's renovation efforts, most likely, but a glaring mistake it is.

Tybalt, Arsene and Belmont are now three against four guards, two others having been disabled in the rush past the antechamber to the gatehouse itself. The oversized lever of the gate can be seen, the rope coiled tightly around the reel. It could, arguably, be thrown open by a well placed dagger strike. Otherwise, however, that person would be vulnerable to the pikemen that converge on the trio.

Belmont d'Eresse has drawn his sword, inhaling through his nose as his gaze lingers on the lever beside the gate. A slightly irritated sigh, when the four guards coming upon them demand attention, as they will have to be dealt with first. Four. Belmont looks towards Tybalt and Arsène, giving a quick nod to them, before… they engage, in a skirmish that better go quick.

Arsène? Arsène doesn't answer the scream. He's grinning, however. Not of amusement, not of happiness, but of dark glee, of bloodlust to be sated. His eyes, already dark, seem darker still, sharpened focus brought to life by the combat soon upon the trio. His longsword is drawn, and heedless of the uncoming pikes, the Trevalion charges them. Someone else might have to take care of the lever, Arsène's gotten what he really came here for.

As the senior member of this little escapade, Tybalt naturally brings up the rear. He is armed as well, his weapon of choice a Sabra that matches the smaller dagger still on his hip, tempting a target though yonder lever might be. The others can go first. He waits for a mental count of three, possibly four ticks before coming in after Belmont.

Perhaps Tybalt's decision to hang back for a few seconds helps; perhaps not. He does succeed in absorbing the attention of one of the pikemen, his prelimilary slash missing even as the pike grazes his arm, but there is no bleeding. Nor is there any stopping. He pressed forward, trying to push his opponant toward the lever, even as he slashes again, quick and quicker.

Glorious combat. It brings a smile to one's face when one's longsword hits through armor ands wounds the man beneath. And Arsène is certainly smiling, despite his own wounds suffered in his all-out assault. "Can't wait your turn, can you?" Arsène asks the guard that attacked him, though he doesn't turn his attention from the man with the polearm. Besides, Belmont seems to have concerned himself with that one. Still, the damage suffered is a reminder to not get /too/ cocky, and thus his stance shifts, from all-out assault to a more balanced stance.

Apparently, Belmont has singled out one of the guards armed with broadswords for his attack. And he goes at him, swinging the blade in a swift strike against his opponent's chest, a strike that must hurt, even with all the armor. What Belmont didn't expect, however, that two other guards would gang up on him. "Damn," is all he manages as he ducks away under a strike aimed at him, air hissing from the sword that hits … air! As Belmont manages to evade that one. The second guard gets him however, with most of the hit deflected by his armor, but certainly not all of it. "Two against one? This is not… fair…", the Eresse lord objects in his accented Caerdicci. Making sure his complaint is understood by the offenders.

"You think so? How about you surrender, then?" The guard states back at Belmont as he and his companions struggle against the d'Angeline trio.

"How about you surrender?" Tybalt will contribute to this conversation cheerfully enough. He sounds chipper, his Caerdicci fluent, though accented more regionally in the Serenissiman flavor. "Last chance. We'll just tie you up and leave you in the chairs there. No?" Another swipe at his own opponent, a flickerflash of steel that is as much to drive the other fellow back as it is to genuinely hurt. The captain may not suffer from the same love of combat that the Trevalion does, but he neither is he distressed by it. Of course, he isn't bleeding. Yet.

One dead! Arsène might have offered congratulations were he not still busy with the man with the polearm. He continues his attack, now unhindered from distraction, intent on bringing that guard down, and remove the threat he poses with his weapon. He doesn't bother speaking, that'd spoil his fun.

"Never!" The dance of swords continues, and Belmont clenches his teeth, as the duo of guards not only continues to go at him. "Genoese cowards!", he spits out, trying to evade their strikes, or to parry them, but failing there. Again, his armor saves him, helping him in keeping his focus on the one that seems to go after Arsène. "Hah!", whirling around he brings his sword down, across the other man's chest, cutting the armor open, and some of the flesh below. A triumph, even if it is bought at the prize of agony and bruises. Belmont is still on his feet though, and in turning around, focuses his attention on one of the pair that keeps getting on his nerves.

It really is no matter to Tybalt that the guards decline his offer of surrender. Really. He even manages a shrug when none of them drop their weapons, pressing forward with one more feint and slash that drops his to the floor. It is here that he takes a second to reassess, but only that, then continues, stepping over what Um is leaking onto the floor to pull the lever and open the gate.

"Not bad," Belmont calls out to Arsène, when the Trevalion manages to deal with the irritating pikeman and put him to rest. While the Eisandine of House Eresse strikes at his guard of choice and merely nicks the lower arm of the man. "Thank you," is offered to Tybalt, when the Rousse at least helps to reduce the number of Belmont's direct opponents to one. "You should have given up and surrendered," this said in Caerdicci to the one remaining guard, he continues to attack.

It seems the trio has a nice timing going on. No sooner has Tybalt dealt with the guard focusing on him that Arsène has run through the pikeman with his longsword, the guard falling at his feet with the heavy weight of corpses. "Likewise, to the both of you." Arsène answers, an odd calm coming upon him with this kill. "Now let's deal with that last one and get on with this, yes?" And without further ado, he turns his attention on the last remaining guard.

Tybalt is free to reach for the lever, and once he does, he has the option of pulling on it or cutting. As he's chosen pulling, it'll take only minor effort to make the ropework go slack, the drawbridge and the gates opening in quick succession as the sound of drums and footsteps draws closer.

Opening this gate is, more or less, the entire objective. All the same Tybalt waits until he is satisfied that the gate will open all the way before turning around to watch the outstanding combat. Watch, mind; he does not join in this particular fight just yet, perhaps convinced that his associates have the matter in hand.

"Alright!", Belmont exclaims when he notices Tybalt going for the lever, while Arsène comes to assist against the remaining guard. "Let's finish this one off, like the others." How easy such phrases come in times of adrenaline rush and clashing steel. Belmont's strike hits air, as the man evades him, whereas the blade of the Genoese broadsword hitting him meets fierce resistance in d'Angeline armor.

While Arsène manages to hit flesh, it is but the man's left hand. "Mm. Tougher than the rest. Now's not the time to find your spine." he remarks as time presses upon the trio. He does not waste any time further, attacking again with the same reckless abandon.

"Well done," says Tybalt after the last man finally drops, as if in this case praise were somehow his to award. He does not yet sheathe his blade though, nor does he abandon his spot by the lever. For the time being he is content to stand aside and wait for the first of the invading soldiers to hit the drawbridge.

The last guard's end is not a smooth one. In the end, it's closer to butcher's work, the way the man is attacked by the two d'Angeline Lords. Still, in the end, the same weakness that was found in his fellow's armour is found again, and he ends run through by Arsène's sword. "Well that was fun." And only then does he glance back to the lever, seeing it taken care of. "Time to bide our time, then."

The fighting takes its toll, and Belmont can sense his movements loosing some of his initial flexibility and momentum. Blade hits armor, and then at air, while the remaining guard strikes at him, in the moment Belmont turns his head to look towards Tybalt as if to check on his efforts with the gate. The consequence is an awful cut to his temple, bleeding of course, but for now not hampering him, apart from yet another source of pain added to already existing bruises. When the man finally goes down, from Arsène's sword, Belmont adds, "Yes. It was about time," to the Trevalion. Senses attuned then to the sound of the approaching army of the Milazzan pretender. And Belmont appears confused for a moment. Hesitant and unsure what to do.

The troops filter in quickly, taking advantage of the fact the gates are wide open, no doubt. As they rush past the gates, the sound of war cries reverberates in the gatehouse, just as people in the town start screaming and the alarm bells finally ring. Steel clashes as the guard garrison starts to scramble in an attempt to repel the enemy. However, they will find it hard; the enemy is too quick, too numerous.
