La Rose Sauvage — Night Court

A huge hearth of black marble, with gargoyles of stone adorning the mantlepiece, governs the foyer of the Salon de la Rose Sauvage, which emanates a certain dark air, the interior design of the more heavy sort, that could easily be encountered in a gentleman's club, especially with the dark cherry wood wainscoting used on the walls. Dark leather upholstery is predominant in the furniture of chaise longues, couches and long-backed chairs that are arranged in a half-circle, leaving space in the center for courtesans (or patrons) to kneel for an inspection. Three tall windows with circular stained-glass insets are framed by dark red curtains of heavy brocade, a few golden threads worked into the fabric catching occasionally the light of flickering oil lamps at the walls. The lamps light a pair of portrait paintings, of the two founders of the salon, Edouard Shahrizai and his cousin Annabelle no Mandrake, resplendent in their dark Kusheline appeal; and a cabinet in a corner, holding a number of quality wines and a flagon of uisghe.

The foyer has a high ceiling, and a gallery beyond a balustrade of dark teak wood, carved in the shapes of gargoyles. Sometimes a few veiled creatures can be spotted up there, stealing glances at what is going on below; from the gallery, which can be reached by ascending some winding stairs at the back of the foyer. Beside the stairs leading up is a hallway on ground level, leading further into the building to where the offices of the leader of the salon and his two Seconds can be found, along with the two wings of private quarters for roses of Mandrake and Valerian canon.

It seems to become a habit of Séverine to make a last round about the parlor on late and rainy evenings. But on this eve, she wears a long-sleeved gown of dark blue, in the flowing silks she seems to prefer to more obstructing, courtly fashion. Moving about with more grace than on their last encounter on the eve before, the Second seems to be recovering well. Her dress however obscures the marque on her back still, for reasons Gauge may very well know. Honey blonde hair with that slightly reddish glow tumbles about her shoulders, for once not bound in a knot of sorts, and so it cascades down till far below her shoulder blades, shimmering in the light of oil lamps.

Gauge makes his way into the Salon later than usual and takes a look around to see whom might be present, it seems that the late hour is something that he has come to enjoy. Perhaps because there is less people around and it's easier to learn about things without making a fool of himself. He doesn't have any wine as of yet, but it seems someone somewhere has taken his coat leaving him just in his shirt and his vest and otherwise looking rather more like his position than he often does since his arrival. As he looks around though he does catch sight of Severine and he studies her without going out of his way to greet her yet, the Baron instead examining the Second and how she moves through the Salon on her last minute check. A faint smile curves the corners of his lips as he watches her and then his gaze falls to all the other details. There is a moment where he just stills but then he starts into the Salon, "You are looking well Séverine. It does not look like it will be much longer before you can take another assignment should you wish."

He may have already been there lingering for a moment, but just like Gauge seems to be in no hurry to greet her, neither is Séverine. A smile she offers to the remaining adept, dismissing her for the night, before she turns and pointedly looks in the baron's direction, meeting his appraising gaze. "Thank you, my lord.", she responds softly, but not without that faint flicker in her gaze. And no, she isn't surprised he suddenly stands there. He had been too frequent a caller of late, to truly surprise her, at least in this. "At least I am already fit enough again, to offer hospitality, should it be required.", is added in a somewhat vague remark. "Would you like anything to drink? How can we serve you at this late hour?" While her manner is courteous, there is something below the surface, a hidden question of another sort perhaps, but if there is, she doesn't voice it.

At the faint flickers of something that Gauge cannot quite make out Gauge looks a bit concerned for a moment. The faintest of frowns curls his lips, "I had come to speak with Desarae, if I could find her." He finally says after a few moments of silence, "I was offended and upset by the way she treated my friend with her attitude but she did not deserve my comments that followed." He pauses, "And neither did you Séverine. You were right to say something to me at that moment but I was too angry to say what I should have then." He bows his head silently, "If she is not available, then at least I was able to do half of what I intended this eve." He pauses, "My words were unkind, and it was not my place to say such a thing. I am sorry Séverine." He offers a polite and formal bow, if not the most graceful of things. He needs more practice.

<FS3> Severine rolls Composure: Good Success. (4 3 8 4 1 4 7 6)

It is as if the grey color of her eyes looks even brighter, in the moment Séverine straightens with that certain proud lift of her chin. The expression on her face is hard to make out, however, as her lips seem to curve only slowly, almost reluctantly into a smile. A nod is given, acknowledging his apology for what it is, and a shadow falls over her features, the shadow of a thought that seems to dampen her mood. "I understand," she tells him, and with a soft inhale she closes the distance to the baron of Beaucare until she stands before him, lifting her eyes to meet his gaze. "Desarae was being rude.", this she admits with a sigh. "She was acting inappropriately, even if you have to admit that not a single word of offense was uttered towards the ambassador." Tilting her head a little, she continues, not breaking eye contact. "I am angry at Desarae for this. But I accept your apology. You cannot mean to know the criteria of what makes someone fit to be chosen for Naamah's Service. In Desarae's case, it is her stubborn pride. This makes her a desirable debutante for some, but…" A line of teeth catches her bottom lip, "she did push her game a bit too far last night. Perhaps…" She chuckles, a soft silvery thing rippling through the deserted salon, "she hoped to win your respect with her attitude." The dark blue silk of her gown rises and falls with a deep breath, "I am sorry for the offense taken by Lady Aziza Nimr. Knowing she is a guest of the Duchesse, I hope this will not bring our salon into discredit."

"Perhaps." Gauge answers in that gravelly voice, "I cannot claim to know her mind or her desires but I doubt she would wish my company at this point. Every time I have come to the Salon since she has hidden herself away from me unless she is still confined to her room." He reaches out to lightly try and take Séverine's hands in his own if she allows him to, but he still holds her gaze too. "I believe an apology from the novice to the Ambassador may go a long way to soothing her mood." He pauses, "It is just a thought, at this point she is angry enough to not wish to associate with any who would associate with Desarae." He considers, "Obviously this is unacceptable to me and I am… disturbed that she would attempt to influence me against the whole of La Rose Sauvage, but having been in her position in other countries I understand her anger."

Those slender-fingered hands of hers do not evade the touch, when it is offered by Gauge d'Eresse, and Séverine does not refuse him, when he takes them into his. Her eyes, however remain bright, as she listens, as a Second should do when it comes to matters that may very well influence the standing of the salon she represents. "You are suggesting that Desarae should apologize for a look she gave the ambassador?", she tries summing up his thoughts on the matter. "I… will consider this. But at the same time, where would it get us?" Eyelashes move in a slow blink. "You are aware of how low the opinion of your ambassador may be of those serving in the Night Court? She is a foreigner. I am surprised that she voiced interest in Marielle, but… does she truly understand what Service to Naamah means to us d'Angelines? This sounds as fair an assumption as what Desarae's look may have suggested to her. I shall bring this matter before Jacques, the leader of our salon. And he shall decide the appropriate measures. Perhaps… it would be more advised to go for a… strategy that leads to mutual understanding. Perhaps I… should try to talk to her, my lord. I will talk to Desarae, of course."

"Marielle has a favorable opinion of the Lady Aziza Nimr." Gauge answers, "Just yesterday the White Rose gifted the Ambassador with a token of affection, or appreciation, in front of several lords and ladies at the Ducal Palace. I do believe that the situation is salvageable. As for her knowledge, I am educating her as best I can, and she is not…" He considers his words a moment, gently squeezing Séverine's hands in his own, "Against learning what it means. She is beginning to understand that it is a part of our religion to our savior but she has been here only a week. Understanding, true understanding, takes more than that." He smiles a little wryly, "She is proud of who she is as we are proud of who we are. I can respect that. The difference to her I think is that she came here to learn and to understand and was met with obvious distaste and displeasure due to her very existence which is what offended her so." He considers, "I am new to politics. My politics always came at the point of a sword. All I wish… is to repair all of this if I can find a way to. I enjoy the Ambassador's company, but I cannot simply avoid what is part of who I am."

The information about Marielle visiting the palace with a token of appreciation for the ambassador manages the trick to have Séverine exhale with relief. "Ah… then it is not as bad. Marielle is obviously doing her part in evening the glitch out, so I'll doubt that Lady Aziza would voice her opinion against a salon she must favor at least for Marielle's sake. I remember, the ambassador spoke favorably of Marielle. Which changes things, in a way." Her gaze goes distant for a moment, as she digests this thought, lips curling. Grey eyes shift towards Gauge again, and she smiles. "Of course, perhaps she would be better advised to seek instruction and information from one of our priests, in the matter of religion." A pause then, before she adds, lowering her gaze. "I can understand that she means something to you, and yet, even she cannot expect of you to deny your nature and what is alright to do for an d'Angeline. Perhaps…" And here Séverine straightens, leaving her hands in his. "Perhaps what you are asking for is to abstain from your expressed interest in Desarae's debut, in particular. As it would affect your standing with this ambassador."

"I believe that her opinion is mostly directed towards Desarae herself, and that of the Valerian path perhaps by association." Gauge says softly in his deep rumble, "You are right in that she does not dislike the whole of the Court, or the whole of La Rose Sauvage, which is why I suggested the apology from Desarae herself." He looks down at Séverine's hands in his for a moment before he looks back up towards her eyes, "As for Desarae's debut, I am of two minds." He considers, "On one side I am afraid that if I won, I would allow my anger at this past situation to cloud my judgement. I do not wish to break her completely. The other is that I do not wish to taint her debut, if I won, I do not wish her first time to be with someone she dislikes." He pauses, "That could damage her as well."

"It all comes down to me having a talk with Desarae," Séverine remarks with a flicker in her gaze. "I truly do not care about Lady Aziza's opinion about the Valerian path, if it is based on one single look from a stubborn novice." A faint smile there. "But again, all of this is hearsay, with you acting messenger, where a direct exchange could perhaps offer more enlightenment. All it took was a look and in the blink of an eye, offense was taken, without even inquiring about the cause. I reprimanded Desarae at once, I sent her to the dormitory, so in a way, I still feel a taint of rebuke clinging to the look Lady Aziza gave me, the oh so subtle stabs dealt with words, where I was showing the respect she felt she deserved. So…in a way, the situation as it is affects me as well, my lord." She nods her head, to Gauge's considerations about the debut. "In all of this, I would advise you to speak to Desarae, in case you are still meaning to bid. But the longer we are speaking of this, the more I doubt it would be a good path to pursue. Not with matters unresolved as they are now."

"You are right of course." Gauge rumbles and he shrugs a little, "I can only do what I can. I cannot speak with those who will not speak with me as it is with Desarae." He frowns, "In the end, what occurs between Lady Aziza and the Salon is.. not my concern only in so much as I care about both sides. I am in the middle but powerless beyond sharing my opinion." He shakes his head afterwards. "I have not made up my mind as to Desarae's debut. It is still a month off yet and I have time to change my decision and hopefully to speak with Desarae myself so I can come to one." He chuckles, "Though as I have said several times now, I doubt I will have the funds to win it regardless so it may well be a moot point." He then gestures towards the chairs, "Will you sit with me?" It is not a command, it is a question. Perhaps because she is still in her period of recovery, perhaps because he is not looking at her as just a Courtesan at this moment in time. It is hard to say. "I would like to spend time with you, if you are willing."

"Yes, I understand that you are meaning to mediate." Séverine gives Gauge a long look, before she lowers her gaze and nods her head. "You shall speak with her, after I have had my own little talk with Desarae. As for the funds…" A faint smile there, "I don't doubt you have some to spend. At least there won't be any ducs or duchesses intervening with stellar bids, which as one hears can occur sometimes at debuts on Mont Nuit in Elua. Call it the blessing of this being a provincial capital. Not that I doubt we will have some interested parties wishing to win her of all. As I said. Giving first polish to a diamond can be a tempting opportunity." Grey eyes follows the gesture of his hand, and for a moment there is hesitation. "Sit with you," Séverine echoes then, turning her gaze back towards his face, a faint glitter in her eyes. "Yes, I would like that. The morning is still hours away, and I have no other upcoming… engagements."
