Known Information

The widowed wife of the baron d'Yquem, the widowed consort of the duc de Toluard, and until recently in her own right the comtesse de Bordeaux, Oriane Somerville de Toluard is a lady of (ahem) mature years recently settled in Marsilikos.

She is known for her deep romantic attachment to the late duc, Enguerrand de Toluard; for the flowering of his court at Bordeaux under her hand; and for administering the Toluard duchy hand in hand with him for a quarter of a century. His death in a jousting accident in the summer of 1309 utterly altered the circumstances of her life, an upheaval from which she is seeking recovery in this mild southern city.

Every so often the borders of Euskerria, carved two centuries ago out of Terre d’Ange and Aragonia, come into dispute. The powerful kingdoms at either side nibble away at the mountainous little state in between them until their depredations can no longer be ignored, and diplomats of the three states commence another measure of their delicate dance… In the 1260s Lord Enguerrand, the seven-year-old eldest son of the duc de Toluard, was sent into Euskerria as a proof of d’Angeline good faith; the young hostage lived three and a half years among strangers before he was redeemed by his grandmother’s trickery and brought home again, escorted by Siovalese lords and pursued by Euskerrian arrows, riding hell-for-leather down out of the mountains in the arms of a courageous Toluard lady. Their adventure sowed the seeds of a love affair and a legend… or did the tale begin earlier, after all?

Oriane Somerville came to Siovale in the very year of Enguerrand’s birth, as the bride of his great-great-uncle the baron d’Yquem. It was said of her that she was conceived in a garden beneath the first new moon of spring, and then born as the Longest Night turned to a bright white snowy dawn. The prophecy pronounced over her in her cradle was that she would save a head of white and lose a head of gold; that she would know great sorrow, and govern all. Some of the tales, the ballads, and the poems maintain that she knew Enguerrand de Toluard before he was born — and perhaps she did feel him kicking in his mother’s womb during her early days in Bordeaux? — but the conventional version of their story suggests that the ducal heir fell in love with his grandmama’s beautiful protégée when he was but six years of age. He carried with him into captivity the memory of her pure white gowns, her golden hair and her fine blue eyes, and the last gentle, apple-fragrant embrace she gave him before he was taken away into the mountains. A promise, perhaps, not to forget his plight. She never did — and from that day, or the day when she rode into an Euskerrian fortress to rescue him, or simply the day when Elua and his angels wrote their fate in the heavens, she was the woman of his life.
